A FORMER health care assistant at St Richard’s Hospital has pleaded not guilty to one count of rape, and four other sexual offences against a patient.

Sajin Kunjappu Panikkassery, 29, formerly of Langton Road, Chichester, has been remanded in custody since he was arrested following the alleged incident at the hospital on January 10.

He appeared at Chichester Crown Court on Friday afternoon (April 5) via a video link from Lewes Prison.

He has also been charged with five alternative offences involving sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder, whose choice was impeded.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was in her 20s and was a patient at the hospital.

A date for the trial is yet to be set, but is likely to be sometime in October.
