A paedophile campaigner who joined the Labour Party to support Jeremy Corbyn knocked on doors for the party and had a beer with his local Labour MP.
Tom O’Carroll has been kicked out of Labour after his conviction and chairmanship of the Paedophile Information Exchange came to light yesterday.
O’Carroll, who campaigned to lower the age of consent to just 10, joined Labour in September but had his party membership suspended yesterday once his past was exposed.
The 70-year-old was jailed in 2006 for distributing indecent images of children and when he joined Labour was facing a new trial for abusing brothers aged nine and ten.
O’Carroll told the North West Evening Mail he did not want to ’embarrass’ Mr Corbyn with his membership.
O’Caroll revealed he had been ‘campaigning’ with Labour during a local by-election – admitting his involvement created a ‘safeguarding issue’ in case children opened the door to him.
But he insisted he was never alone on the doorstep.
Labour today said O’Carroll had been ‘auto excluded’ from the party following his suspension yesterday and would not have the opportunity to resign.
Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock, the constituency association O’Carroll joined, said he was shocked to discover the ‘pleasant and articulate’ man he met at a constituency function was a ‘highly dangerous man’.
O’Carroll said: ‘I am going to resign straight away as the last thing I wanted to do was embarrass Mr Corbyn.
