Dr Andrew Emerson was born in Bournemouth. He attended the Reading Blue Coat School and Bournemouth College of Technology.
Andrew took his first degree at the University of Essex in 1978, an upper second class joint BA Honours in Philosophy and Sociology. He worked for a few years for firms of accountants in Bournemouth and Christchurch before changing direction and training as a mental health nurse in London.
After qualifying Andrew worked at Graylingwell Hospital in Chichester.
Having become interested in the community care of people with enduring mental health problems, Andrew undertook a PhD study at the University of Southampton, funded by the Department of Health.
Andrew was awarded his PhD degree in 1994. The results of his empirical research were published as a commercial book by the Stationery Office, formerly Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.
The book was entitled Hospital Hostels: An Evaluation of Four Psychiatric Care Facilities.
Dr Emerson subsequently held several teaching positions, including that of Lecturer at the University of Reading and at the former Chichester Institute of Higher Education.
In 2012, with other like-minded patriots, he helped launch a new political party called Patria for which he has subsequently fought a number of elections.
Andrew has lived in Chichester for the last thirty years, practising as a mental health nurse in Sussex and Hampshire.
